What Kind of Website?

It is difficult to decide what kind of website to aim for and how it should be built. If you look around at the freelance jobs boards, it seems that every customer already knows what they want and exactly what technology to use to get it. How do they know this?

The simple answer is that they don’t and a lot of money is spent by customers on website designs that exceed their requirements. Below I list a number of typical scenarios and the best solution to meet the needs of each scenario.

Simple, Informational Website

This is where you want to advertise the existence of yourself, your company, your product or your service, in the form of a basic informational website which is rarely if ever going to change.

The design can be any page layout you choose, with logo or banner graphic and a consistent style throughout.

You will need to provide any graphics and text to go on the pages, although I can help you with that.

To publish the website on the internet, you can use any ISP (Internet Service Provider) to publish with or I can find one for you (I recommend a reliable service that costs only a few pounds a month).

The initial outlay will be small and the website will be completely reliable and never require upgrading because of technology changes.

I can set up a simple informational website in a matter of 2-3 days if you already have a graphic design and some content to go on the pages. The base price for this Basic Service, 5 pages, with logo or graphics supplied by you, is £150. If you want some graphic design work, copy writing or other input other then design and setup, these will increase the basic price.

Simple, Informational Website with Occasional Changes

If you just want to occasionally update the wording of a website, it is most cost-effective to use the Basic Service as above and get me to make the changes when necessary. This means there is a cost to each update, which I charge by the hour or part-hour, but the initial outlay will be small.

Simple, Informational Website with Frequent Content Changes

In this scenario, the requirement is similar to above, but you want to be able to edit the text on each page of the website yourself but without changing the number of pages. For example, you might want to put regularly-updating status information on the home page.

In this case you again want a basic design, with logo or banner graphic and a consistent style throughout.

I can then supply the editing software, of my own design, to allow you to make your own changes.

To publish the website on the internet, you can use any ISP (Internet Service Provider) to publish with provided that they support the web technologies PHP and MySQL. I can find one for you (I recommend a reliable service that costs a few pounds a month).

The initial outlay will be slightly larger than the previous scenarios and the website will require occasional upgrading because of technology changes.

I can set up a simple informational website in a matter of 4-5 days if you already have a graphic design and some initial content to go on the pages. The base price for this User-editable Service, 5 pages, with logo or graphics supplied by you, is £250. If you want some graphic design work, copy writing or other input other then design and setup, these will increase the basic price.

Fully Editable Website

In this scenario, you want to be able to add or remove pages, edit the content, add images and other media, basically have control of all content. You might also want a Blog or News feed to keep customers up to date.

In this case you want a Content Management System (CMS).

I recommend using WordPress as a CMS. This is simple to install and very simple to use. It is also simple to customise to your design. WordPress is a very well-used and therefore well-tested CMS which is best known for its Blogging support. Indeed, some people might tell you that it is Blogging software and not a CMS. They are wrong! It is an excellent CMS and this site uses it.

The initial outlay will be about the same as the previous scenario, but you have to then fit in with the WordPress way of working. The website will require moderately frequent upgrading because of technology changes, although WordPress makes this very easy to do.
